Messing with the N900

Apparently Nokia believes the mobile network carriers won’t be interested in selling the N900 because it won’t let them mess with the operating system.

Strangely enough, this is one of the reasons why I will be buying one.

Also interesting to see that Nokia doesn’t consider the N900 to be the “next generation” of computers. That honour is reserved for their fifth generation tablet – the model after the N900.

I fear getting one won’t be easy. Nokia don’t exactly have a retail presence outside of Vodafone and Telecom, and I doubt they’ll be bringing them in (although Telecom could surprise us). So I could be relying on parallel importers (ugh) or Trademe (double ugh) which is quite risky for such an expensive device. Anyway I’ll look at my options once it comes out.

Could you get one from the states? Say, if you knew someone?

These are one of the few phones I actually want. Most are just meh. Know if it has a 3.5mm jack?

Problem is that the US networks operate in a different band, it wouldn’t necessarily work here. Better to source from Hong Kong.

I’m sure it does have a 3.5mm jack, and the main pic on gsmarena seems to confirm it.
